Steve Perrin's Quest Rules

Steve Perrin's Quest Rules

Just saw this in the RuneQuest mailing list.  Thought I would let everyone know about it.

I realize that this is a sign of the Apocalypse, but I am actually working on SPQR. I haven’t updated the chapter available on my website because it is still being worked on, but soon.

If you are a subscriber to the rules, now would be a good time to remind me. I’ve undergone about three new computers and a couple of crashed hard drives and a motherboard, and my list has suffered greatly. I used to keep copies of everyone’s subscription letters, but they were in one of those hard drive disasters.

Since I am actually working on the skills chapter, reminding me would be good at this time. If you would like to look at my first chapter (whether a subscriber or not), send me an email and I’ll pass it along. It’s offered free on the website, anyway.

Oh, and I’m gaming guest of honor at SpoCon in Spokane over the weekend of August 2nd, if anyone here is up there and wants to stop by and say howdy.

Take care, all,
Steve Perrin

If you want to get in touch with Steve I suggest stopping by his website – Perrin’s World of Wonder.

D&D GSL Logo

Wizards of the Coast has release the 4th Edition SRD and Game System License. It’s not as liberal as the 3.5e version. You are required to register the with them and actually own a copy of Dungeon & Dragons 4th Edition if you want to use it.

The Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition Game System License (D&D 4E GSL) is a license that allows third parties to use certain intellectual property owned by Wizards of the Coast with the company’s permission in order to create products compatible with the 4th Edition of the Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game.

The System Reference Document (SRD) is a reference document detailing Terms, Tables and Templates that are available for license under the GSL. The SRD is an appendix to the GSL.

There’s a brief piece on the Wired website about the 20-sided die.  Apparently the icosahedron‘s usage as a die in games dates back at least two millenia to the Romans.

PC Gen is a character generator for Dungeons and Dragons

PCGen is an open source character generator for role-playing games. It currently is aimed at supporting as many RPGs as is humanly possible. The project’s current focus is on OGL games (OGL is Wizards of the Coast’s Open Gaming License). PCGen runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Unix/Linux using Java 1.4/1.5.

PCGen has released its first Beta (5.13.11) for the upcoming 5.14 production release. Since the 5.10.x series began, the PCGen developers have managed to put out increasingly polished production releases. An important aspect in getting that polished release was the enthusiasm and support the PCGen community gave in testing release. If you are interested testing the beta sign up for the Yahoo! group at PCGen News and Notes.

My Life With Master

I just heard about this My Life with Master and it has been described on Play This Thing blog “as seminal a work in the history of tabletop role-playing games as Frankenstein was for literature.” It a game about playing the henchmen of an evil Master as in Igor or Renfield. Interesting no? Actually it sounds sort of like the inspiration for the computer game Overlord, which is a blast.

Basic RolePlaying - Zero Edition

I’ve been meaning to post about this for some time. Had to get the site back in order to do so. In any event Chaosium is finalizing the 1st Edition of the Basic Roleplaying book. It is a complete rules system integrating 30 years of game play and refinement to allow play in any genre, from fantasy to sci-fi, from modern horror to supers and everything in between. From what Chaosium says the final book will released sometime around June 2008 and run somewhere in the range of 390 pages.

Jerks of the Industry

February 6th, 2008 by Dan Zappone
Comic Book Guy

Comic Book Guy

I’ve been in contact with various members of the computer and role-playing game industries over the past few years and with some before that and it’s become my opinion that for the most part they are real jerks. They mostly seem to suffer from Comic Book Guy syndrome.

Noted for doing things like but not limited to:

  • not responding to my email or phone calls
  • being sarcastic in socially inept ways
  • acting like I am a complete moron
  • treating me as a second class citizen
  • shutting down discussions or groups with no explanation
  • being almost indifferent toward me when they do bother to respond
  • being ungracious with offers I have proposed
  • acting interested in what I have to say and then not following up at all even with gentle encouragement
  • being self-centered to the point of exclusion
  • generally acting in a rude or anti-social manner

I have found only a few exceptions over the years to this behavior, among them: Greg Stafford, Steve Perrin, Loyd Blankenship, Jason Durall and Fergie at Chaosium. All the other RPG writers, game developers and publishers, including some at Chaosium, Mongoose Publishing, Steve Jackson Games, Epic, and Blizzard have just been rude.

Because of this I am serious thinking about giving up even the idea of playing or running another game. I definitely won’t be playing and MMOs any time soon. The only thing that might remotely encourage me is if the group of people I used to play with were to get back together – but this is extremely unlikely given that some of them have moved to Connecticut.

Well hell. I’m more pissed about the industry people than anything else.
